Explorer crashes when I try to play certain AVI/DIVX/MPEG

I've heard people refer to things like GSPOT and who knows what else, but I have yet to find a place that explains what I need to do.

What could be the culprit for this freeze up? I initially thought it was a bad hard drive but I'm not so sure anymore...this was because I noticed it on my auxiliary hard drive so I backed up that stuff and reformatted, but I tried playing some of the files on my mail hard drives and I got the same thing...explorer ramps up to like 60 or 70% and system fills in the rest.

What do I do?

do you by chance have divx software installed? like the divx player or dr divx? if so, try uninstalling it and see if that helps.

I had the same issue a few days ago. I tried uninstalling ffdshow and Nero which has codecs of it's own, but still no go.

I then looked at the Event Viewer for when the crashes happened. I saw a file (cevideo.ax) or some crap like that, and it was related to the ULEAD software. Uninstalled ULEAD, and everything was well.

Obviously, this isn't the same thing for you. But definitely uninstall/re-install codecs that you have, and then try checking the Event Viewer for clues.

as keysersose says -- it's usually because there is a problem invoking the codec while trying to generate a thumbnail image or read additional data from the file. try determining which codec is being used using gspot, and seeing if there is an update for it.

Hmmm....this may be jumping ahead of ourselves. But I don't know if that should be running if you're not running a webserver. Just to be on the safe side, run a full virus scan. Am I being paranoid?

Then post that your Event Viewer says in the "Application" log when it you have a crash in Explorer.

That's nothing that should conflict with your video files, so no. But can you post what the event viewer says in the Application log during an Explorer Crash pleazeeeeeeee?

Yes you can, I seen this post once & i saved it. :)

The fix for Windows XP not letting you delete .avi

I've seen this coming up more and more all over the place so I figured I'd stick it here.

Avi files (divx) can be trouble in xp. there is a fix to let xp behave much better so it's possible to move or delete large avi files. The obnoxious bug in XP that causes Explorer to read the entire contents of broken AVI files before allowing any access to them is caused by bad behavior of shmedia.dll.

To correct this misbehavior in Windows XP, remove the following
registry key.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}InProcServer32

This will prevent Explorer from loading shmedia.dll in response to file property queries on these files.

Just an extra note, if you do a "search" for this key it will not be found, look for it manually it is very easy to find. As always newbie or not, if you FUBAR your registry its your own fault. This fix does work, I use it and have applied it to many XP machines. Now go ahead and fix this royal pain in the ass!

Try turning off the media preview. Fixed it for me

Start - run - regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll

All i did which seems to be working now was I installed Divx free version that is compatible with XP SP2... i was using an older one before. Im not sure if this is a SP2 issue because i have never had this problem until sp2.

I never tried the registry or un registering the dll because that is a temp fix because it causes windows to avoid the problem HEH... but still sometimes the Preview stuff makes things go slower and is not really needed. Either way im sure one of these posts will help people fix the problem.

hmm, i removed the media preview thing, but now i cant open my avi's. it just crashes whatever player its using
