when windows 98 starts up it goes to an all blue screen
and says that explorer has caused an illegal operation and
gives the option to close or look at the details. under
the details section it says "Explorer caused an invalid
page fault in module Explorer.exe at 017f:00401f31." When
i try to start the cpu in safe mode it says
"Windows XMS Driver version 3.95
Extended Memory Specification (XMS) version 3.0
copyright.........

Error: Himem.sys has detected unreliable XMS memory at
address 0320E29A
XMS Driver no installed
To continue starting you computer, press enter.
Himem.sys is missing

Make sure that the file is in your windows directory"

The file is there (himem.sys) but it doesn't seem to work.
there is a DVD rom and a cd rom but neither of them seem
to be working. They did before all this happened.
They are recognized by the cpu at startup
and all that stuff but i can't get to the cd/dvd rom's
directories, invalid directory stuff. please give me any
information on how to fix this. i've been working with it
for quite a while (days) and i'm completely stumped.
PLEASE HELP. Thanks
.

Try booting off a 98 startup disk.
CD to C: and do a DIR. Look for himem.sys
You can try copying himem off the floppy and overwriting the existing file or simply delete the existing file and copy the new one to C:\

If none of this works I think it's install time.

Before doing a full reinstall of Win98 you can first try installing Win98 over itself. Sometimes that replaces corrupted files and after the install it will run normally again. Doing it this way all your installed programs and updates will still be installed. A big time saver especially if you are using older Windows programs and the updates are no longer available or hard to find.

GGssss,
Himem.sys is a system file just use the system file checker to replace the file. It can be found under programs/accessories/system tools click on system information then click on tools. I hope this helps!

i have already tried to reinstall win 98 over the one that was previously on. It looked like it was going to work but when it finally finished it's last restart and started loading it did the same thing that it had been doing. i had read on another forum that it could be that the ram is bad, not firmly seated or it's mismatched. The cpu had been working fine and it hadn't been moved anywhere. i'm going to try to remove the ram and put it back in. hopefully that will work. about the system checker, i can't get into windows at all, except for the blue screen. any more suggestions would be greatly appreciated and thanks for the one's given so far.

Can you see the Ram count during post?
How about a BIOS screen on startup? I think you're on the right track with the memory.
