Exploding hard drives

I seem to remember a time when I was in high school, and while listening to the radio on the bus one day I heard some interesting news about hard drives. Apparently there was in development the idea of exploding hard drives. According to the news I heard, the hard drives would literally self distruct and be destroyed when break-in attemts were detected. Thats pretty much all I can remember.

The thing is, I dont know if this really happened or if this is just a self-generated memory of my mind.
Anyone else hear of this?

Why dont they just make it to where the pc will shut off instead?? lol
