exploding cd in my 3550

I recently got out my old broodwar cd and started playing. After about 10 minutes or so in my nec 3550a it made a loud pop/crack sound and then started making a loud buzzing or grinding sound. I pressed the open button promptly and the cd was in pieces, shattered to bits. Has anyone ever had a simlar experience or heard of this happening?
I opened up the case and there are bits of plastic everywhere inside the drive.

I was thinking i would call up nec to get it exchanged for a new one. Any suggestions?

The disc probably had a crack that you didn't notice.

At full speed, readers spin so fast that a defect like that will bring on The Shattering.

I would call NEC and tell them what happened most likely they will ship you a new one the bad thing is you did open the drive voiding the warranty. I am thinking maybe the CD already had some cracks or something? to cause it to break spinning fast

with the cost of DVD Burners even if they didn't replace it you can get a new one for fairly cheap.

CD's break every so often in drives. If you took apart the drive then you have voided the warranty. What you can do though is get all the pieces out of the drive, it may still work. A friend of mine did that and the drive is still functional.
