Explaining reactive power to someone has to be one of the greatest challenges known to man ;)

+1 reps for anyone who understands it, let alone can explain it simply.

I honestly think understanding the maths is the easiest way to explain it, which is pretty much the definition of fail on the explanantion front.

Just for the record, my favourite analogy is the dudes with buckets of water climbing ladders ;)

I'm interested in understanding who pays for the SVC, and I'm talking big ones used for network stability rather than associated with specific loads.

After a quick google search and a min or two of reading, I don't understand what's so esoteric about "reactive power" ?

This should be good ;)

Explain it simply to me then, along with what it does and why it is so important, without using the maths.

The buckets analogy is really all you need to understand it simply. Obviously the analogy is not 100% correct, but then, that's the point in using an analogy, and not explain it with math. To be honest, I really don't feel the need to compose an essay to satisfy your e-peen. There are enough resources on the net to read all that's necessary to handle the basic grasp as long as you have a decent math/science foundation. Lastly, it just seemed like a braggadocios "hey, look at my throwing around of big words" thread. If you really wanted to discuss it, why post in OT, and not take it right to Highly Technical?

Go easy on the teenage angst my friend :)

Remember you're the one who came in here an announced with a swashbuckling swagger that you couldn't understand what I was getting at, Mr Esoteric ;)

I didn't mean to offend, and I was really commenting on the challenge of explaining it to someone without a good maths/science background.

Peace?

No need to be churlish.

You came in here to talk yourself up using fancy words and suggesting that I was a fool, then had the audacity to abuse me for asking you to substantiate your claim and furthermore attempted to make fun of me for using 'big words' in my thread.
