Explain z77 and p67 interghangeability with generation 2 and 3 i5 and i7 processors

From reading advertising copy I get the impression a z77 board will work with either a generation 2 or a generation 3 processor. I'm not clear if a P67 board willk work with either processor. I'm asking because i would like to upgrade my H67 board with a 3rd generation I5 for now and get a H77 board later on down the pike. Am I thinking correctly?

Yes, P67 will work with either 2nd Sandy bridge or 3rd gen Ivy Bridge, but no PCI Express 3.0. 😉

I think I will bite the cannon shell and get an Ivy bridge I5, and in a few months get a Z or H 77 board. probably and H. I don't overclock except the gratis overclock that the intel board gives and the only game I play is good old Flight Sim X. Tied in with Virtu I get pretty good graphics with an 460 card. The intel 4000 onboard graphics in Ivy bridge will only help. Maybe six months down the road I'll move up to a invidia 500 GPU. prices will be really down by then.

No guarantees: update your motherboard bios first.
Check (via Google search) your exact motherboard model number for possible problems running with Ivy Bridge.

your not from around here are you...

You might look up your motherboard on the manufacturers website and see if it supports the processors or not. One clue might be if there is a BIOS update to support the processor you want. You can probably download a manual online that will detail what processors it supports. Support for the 3rd Gen Intel i-5 was an afterthought in most cases.

Most P67, Z68, and H67 boards will work with Ivy Bridge processors given a BIOS update. We really need to know what exact board you currently have to say for sure though.

Also, it doesn't really make any sense to upgrade from a Sandy Bridge quad core to an Ivy Bridge quad or from H67 to H77. I can see going from a Sandy Bridge dual to an Ivy Bridge quad while keeping the old mobo though.
