Please explain to me why 60GB 7200RPM ULTRA ATA 100 HARD DRIVE is faster than and better to have than 80GB 5400RPM ULTRA ATA 100 HARD DRIVE ? Thank you.
 
Revolutions Per Minute = RPM. A Hard Drive is a mechanical device that transfers data by rotating magnetic plates. In theory, access times and transfer rates can be quicker with a greater rotational speed of the Hard Drive (RPM). It is not neccessarily better to have a 60 GB 7200 RPM HD than a 80 GB HD 5400 RPM. That my friend is totally subjective (I might like more space, or the 5400 RPM Drive might be quiter, etc.).
 
Let's say you're reading a very long stream of words, and the speed that you read directly correlates to how fast the words pass in front of your eyes.

In this case faster streaming of words = faster reading right?

The HD is reading a circular stream of information in the form of a magnetic platter. Excluding things like seek times, the speed that the platter turns directly correlates with the HDs speed in reading and writing data.

There are other factors that may apply, but this is the essential speed advantage that a 7200 RPM drive has over a 5400 RPM drive.
