So I just purchased all the parts for my new built. Only thing i'm missing is a monitor. First off i'm looking for a monitor between 21.5 - 23''. I mainly play games and watch blue-ray movies so it should support HD.

Could someone explain to me the difference between IPS vs Non IPS monitors? I tried researching but didn't quite understand the terms. Is it more clear like glossy vs matte screens for laptops?

I've seen some good Asus 23'' monitors on sale for 130-150$. How much would a 23'' IPS monitor cost me?

It's IPS (In-plane switching). Basically IPS panels are generally higher quality than TN (what most monitors are) panels and thus have better contrast ratios, color accuracy, and viewing angles. TN panels do generally have faster response times, though IPS panels have been catching up.

A 23" IPS panel line the Dell U2311H will run you about $300.

The last monitor I got was a 18.5" dell widescreen monitor. I liked the quality of the panel. To be honest I purchased it because it was on sale for $99.00. It was only VGA but that was fine with my Integrated motherboard. I usually just watch HULU and a few other sites, so usually the video is not good enough for too large of a monitor. I dont think it would look that good on say a 40" HDTV.

Dell had a 24" monitor on sale last week for under $200.00. I wanted to buy it but I didnt want to spend the money.

Dell is trying to sell this right now for about $204.00. It is actually cheaper to buy it with the soundbar. Some people may not like these because of the odd White back. I dont think they can be monted either. It is kind of an odd model.

I usually use my DELL monitor in a dark room in the basement. Seems ok to me. My wife uses it to look up stock prices.

Thanks! that youtube video helped a lot. I'm probably gonna save up a nice 22'' Dell IPS then. Seems worth it if its only 100$ more.

Edit:: When shopping how do you know if the Monitor is IPS or TN? Is there another term I should be looking for?

Unfortunately a lot of it is basically guesswork. Display makers rarely advertise the kind of panel found in a unit.

You would be able to make an educated guess from the detailed specifications (brightness, viewing angle, contrast values, etc) but unfortunately those numbers get so twisted in order to appease marketing that you really can't take them at face value. It's probably safe to assume that almost all monitors are TN, as IPS panels are so few that they usually get pointed out. Googling usually helps also.

Honestly one of the best ways to tell an IPS panel from a TN panel is the price :D But you get what you pay for, I love my IPS.

Yeah, this is pretty much it. You can either read reviews (tftcentral.co.uk is very good) or just guess from the specs. There isn't a ridiculous proliferation of models in the IPS market like there is in the TN market, so most IPS monitors will have a review.

I am currently looking to get an fresh monitor.

Currently I own an SONY CRT 19" G-420 ( 2001 1000$ )

The transition from an true high quality CRT to even the Dell U2311H ,
it does puzzle me .

The U2311H its an e-IPS , not IPS ( like those in the very expensive range)

Currently I am looking to spot the differences between e-IPS & IPS.

From the reviews - youtube videos & ppl , looks that the U2311H ,
its an attractive offer , but not the "best ever".

I work with Adobe photo-shop , photography , video editing , reading lots of text on display , and gaming .

In my last build I got an Radeon HD5770 .
And so I am looking for an good all around monitor .

If some one has any tips , for an true fresh model , even better than the U2311H , please share the info .

I don't think any current monitors use plain ol' IPS anymore. The higher-end ones are S-IPS and the "lower-end" ones are e-IPS. S-IPS is better, but not twice as good (which is where the prices are). In short:

S-IPS>>e-IPS>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>TN

Yes I will probably do ..

There is no exciting news about something new , even from Cebit,
and so the 2011 will roll, with out further surprises about new monitors.

The above link has an issue , because its redirects to dead end.

Here is the proper one ...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...pk=HP%20LP2465

HP LP2465 Silver / Black 24" 8ms Widescreen LCD Monitor with Height & Pivot Adjustments 500 cd/m2 1000:1
Well that's an old monitor ( technology standard ) , if you like it , get it.

Personally I decided to not get yet the Dell one, I did an phone call today,
at the major Greek importer of Dell (in Athens ) , and did an simple question.

Q: I live far away from Athens ... can you open the box and test the device prior shipping , so to verify , that I will get an perfect one ?

Answer : Νο

kiriakos - Sorry about that, it was working last night. Anyhow, the only thing I see old about it, is maybe the resolution, but I prefer having the extra vertical space.

ps - thanks for posting the correct link. ;)
