Explain this to me (updated)

Today the apartment complex that my girlfriend and I applied to called to tell us that I had been approved, but she had not. Now I am approved and able to pay the rent in full, but they will not let her live with me without a cosigner. If I can easily pay the rent ($480/month, I currently pay $560/month) why would they not let both of us live there? This place is really pissing me off.

Update

I just got off of the phone with the women who approves members and it turns out that in order to be approved each person living in the apartment must make more than 3 times the monthly cost of the apartment. What the hell?

Can you cosign for her and be on the same lease?

From what the leasing agent told my girlfriend, we would have to be married to live there.

Was the agent saying you would have to be married to live there? Or you would have to be married to not need a co-signer?

In either case, you already said they are pissing you off, what's the point of fighting? Just find another place.

I would also suggest looking up what types of laws there are in your state regarding this.

Although, it may just cause problems and they could make your life hell if you moved in after getting them in trouble.

Is housing hard to find where you are?

The reason I want to live there is because they have extremely good rates. They are the cheapest two bedroom apartment we could find by at least $100. For $480/month I was getting a 902sq ft apartment with two bedrooms at 14'x12' each. I am not too sure what she was saying since this information was passed to me through my girlfriend and I can't call since they are closed. I'm going to have to call tomorrow and speak with the manager personally.

Not hard, but inexpensive housing is hard to find since we are at Purdue. The agents jack up prices since college students' parents are willing to pay.

My guess is that they have found people who can more easily afford to live there don't break their lease or trash the place before moving out in the middle of the night. It probably eliminates most students, and that might be how they can afford to have cheaper rent than other places.

Check your lease - she may not have to be on it, in order to live with you.

I only once had a lease where I was not permitted to have anyone live with me (and my gf stayed with me for a month and a half anyway. 😛 )

Could be, but I believe the reason they have such cheap rent is due to location. The place is ~7 miles from Campus so I doubt there are many students living way down there. I don't understand the big deal since I already make more than enough per month to pay several months rent in advance.

$480 for a two bedroom apt? that's total, for both of you? if so.... DAMN. It's easily twice that much around here.... yay for college park

If two people move in, the rent is effectively halved. Why would BOTH people need to make 3x the total rent??
😕

It is based on location. Two bedrooms near campus (within two miles) cost $700/month up to $1500.

Same question I asked the leasing agent, but she said it was her policy. I then made the smartass remark: so for four people to live in a two bedroom income has to be ~$4500/month?

ROFL. Tell the leasing agent you'll move in upon proof of her enrollment in a remedial math course.
