Explain the Different Religions to me..

hevnsnt

Lifer
Alright not to start a flamewar or anything..

So please follow the rules!
Please only post a brief description of your religion. Tell us (if you know) how it differs from others. Do not say anthing about anyone else's religion.. Only what you know.

I don't know much about other religions (I was born/raised christian) and I am interested in broadening my horizons. My wife and I have talked about when we have a kid (some day down the road) to take him to different kinds of churches every week and let him/her decide (if any) religion they would want to be.

Oh, and Someone who is more knowledgeable about christianity should probably describe it.. 😉

Jewish

God created the earth and humanity in an imperfect way, because the greatest good of all is not a perfect world, but a world that becomes perfect. We Jews have a covenant with God where we have a responsibility to "be" the process of perfecting the world... this is called Tikkun Olam... the healing of the world.
All of the commandments in the Torah serve two purposes... 1. Provide us the means by which to have a profound healing effect upon the world. 2. Provide us the means for spiritual connection to God.

Understand: Judaism is a very fluid with it's beliefs... so my interpretation can, and will differ with other jews.

The Messiah:

I believe that the Messianic age is the culmination of our above efforts... it marks the arrival of world peace etc etc.... Thus the concept of Jesus being the messiah is in direct contradiction to our beliefs.

if you want to understand Catholicism, there's a
book called (i'm serious here) "Catholicism for Dummies"
that my church recommends.

you can also call a local Catholic church and ask
about RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults),
where you basically attend a class once a week for several
months where the faith is explained.
