Explain onboard video and audio

It's been a few years since I bought a PC. I now see that they have onboard video and audio on the mobo. Does that mean you don;t need a video or sound card? I doubt it but am looking for an explanation.

Your assumption is correct. Most onboard video and sound setups are not the latest or greatest, but get the job done for servers or those not knowing or caring about performance. Internet surfing or even an occasional game and they work fine, they just are not the best or latest.
