Explain newsgroups and usenet for me

I have read some guides on the subject and it seems fairly straight-forward however I am still confused a little bit.

I have this link with newsgroup servers, but they are all pay.

Plus I imagine I need a reader of some sort. I'm not sure which to use.

The reason I am interested in newsgroups is because of the ISP CAPs in effect for most P2P and because most of the P2P networks contain garbage (aside from bittorrent).

Also

What are the advatages of newsgroups over BT. I am currently able to use BT without caps with generally high speeds (50k-250k on a 2 meg cable connection).

Are newsgroups like IRC, where you must upload and then download with stupid ratio's and stuff, or just download all you please.

Finally

Is there any free newsgroup binary servers I could test out before actually deciding if this is something I would like to purchase?

Thanks.

Once you try newsgroups you will never go back to the scum that is bit torrent.

Yep, although some claim they have access to free servers. There are free servers but the content is limited. Concast gives users 2GB/mo.

I've got Rogers, and I hear they have a Newsgroup but that's all I know.

It's rather easy.

I use usenetserver (http://www.usenetserver.com) and it's 14.95 a month, unlimited. Well worth it, as they have great uptime, good retention and they always max out my connection to the net. The reason I like usenetserver over other providers, is they have their own web based search engine so you can create custom NZBs without downloading headers.

Now for software, I use newsbin pro 4.32. I search for what I want, create a NZB, and use newsbin pro to download the files in my NZB. There are free NZB grabbers out there, I just like this one.

There is a bit of a learning curve with usenet, but overall it's very easy. It's way better than torrent, IRC, and P2P combined. The only thing it reminds me of is old school AOL e-mail file trading.

News Server provided by ISP here is free...retention on binaries isnt as good as say Easynews or some pay service like that...but if I check every 4 or 5 days I wont miss anything.
No limits to downloads either right now...woohoo

rule of thumb is that usenet is the fatest with quitea repository, but for specific things usually out of the mainstream etc, BT is still king

all of you giving him information just broke the first rule of usenet, and therefore should be banned from it.

It's not that difficult. I was a newsgroup noob a few months ago, but I did some research, and I was on the next day. I didn't renew my membership, but it was good while it lasted. It's a lot like mIRC in a way.

You people breaking the first rule drive me insane...

If these people aren't smart enough to figure it out for themselves, they don't deserve it.

Oh sure, call me a jerk until the RIAA and MPAA take notice.

Why is that important? I know that NZBs are the file types to download parts of files and such, but what is the deal with headers?
