i watched this movie for the first time last night, and for starters i thought it was a pretty damn good movie

i am confused about a few things, however

if everything was all made up in his mind, then how did he drive away in a car with the military guy after he dropped off one of his letters in the mailbox when they were being chased...?

how did his wife end up? she was really depressed/pissed/confused about what to do with her marraige...after she tried to get laid and he denied her, she broke the mirror and i got lost after that. i could not figure out when she was happy or if she was even happy at all.

then, i couldnt help but think that life must have sucked for her for quite a while when he was getting better, but then i thought of something else....

did he even get better? i know he became more sane by the end of the movie, but when they were like middle-age and their kid was like 12 or 13 or whatever, was she still sad to be tied into that relationship or was he getting good enough that she "see's the man she married" instead of when he was mentally ill...?

thats all i can think of for now...

thanks!

I'm sure the entire military thing was a figment of his imagination. He probably hopped into his own car and drove around believing he was in a shootout...

As for how the wife did, one of the biggest criticisms of the movie was that it didn't mention that Nash and his wife got divorced and eventually later remarried. Maybe that's why there's that big hole in the movie.

He is still mentally ill, but as he mentioned in the movie, he has simply learned to ignore the characters running around in his head.

how did she handle it though? this is what threw me off...

i am just really curious to know what happened to her during this whole thing. i usually dont care about stuff like this, but this movie just put me in awe because i thought it portrayed the mental illness so well.

i just want to know what happened to her mostly. it was one of those times where i wish i could talk to the real person to ask her how she really felt and what really happened. ahh that kinda stuff bothers me because i will never be able to really know.

i also thought it was pretty funny when at the end of the movie the guy that was presenting his nomination for the nobel prize...

he asked a girl if the guy next to him was "real"

that was amusing, heh

Considering that they got remarried and are still married today, their divorce really has nothing to do with the story in relation to the movie.

He is still mentally ill, but as he mentioned in the movie, he has simply learned to ignore the characters running around in his head.

In my abnormal psych book, it talks about a guy named Micael Laudor. He graduated summa cum laude from Yale and developed schizophrenia at 24. He took lots of meds, went through therapy, and eventually learned to cope. In 1998, he stabbed his wife to death. They speculate that he went off his medication, but a number of things were going on in his life when he did it. So, I would be wary if I were hanging out with John Nash, ;)

Read the book that the movie was based on.

In addition to better explaining some of the motivations etc. (there's no military spy character at all - the book is a serious biography), you find out that Mr. Nash had a mistress with whom he had a child (a child he ignored and didn't support).

The book is pretty spot on with the actual flow of Nash's life. The movie is a tripped out, Disneyfied version of 1/3rd of the book (the flattering 1/3rd).

A couple of points:

1. He didn't develop the illness until he was around his 30's, not in school the way the movie showed.

2. He supposely was involved with a few men but hollywood ignored this because it could have all been a delusion in which he thought he was a woman and that he was interested in men. This doesn't mean that he is gay but just an extension of his illness, probably why hollywood ignored it because it would just confuse people.

3. He was on 60 minutes and he and his wife were together, he also has I believe one or two sons. One of the sons also has his math genius and his illness.

4. Schizophrenia can go into a somewhat remission after 10 years, it's not understood why this occurs
