citi is doing away with free checking which makes this a little less appealing as you can still get free checking at a majority of banks. I work in the financial industry and free checking seems to be getting more scarce, although this happened about 6 years ago too, there may be very few places willing to offer free checking in the future. If you currently have irrevocable free checking it may be a good idea to hang on to it. Citi has also been dragged into the whole problem with enron by allegations they helped with creative debt structuring. This combined with the fact of the lawsuits they are facing from the investment arm of their recent CalFed/Ron Pearlman purchase makes me wonder what they will pull out of the toilet on these accounts in the next 6-12 months.

I'm not crapping on your thread but am curious as to why they would offer something like this

How about Principal bank. 100 deposit gets you 50 bonus plus a 25 Amazon GC when you sign up for Billpay (free) and make one payment. It's free checking and 100 or 200 free checks. Just have to keep the 100 in for 6 months. Easy money.
Here's the link Principal
I did it and I was funded with both in a couple weeks.

A question, there is citibank in my area. If I open an Citibank account in New York, but I'm living in New Jersey, do I need to pay New York State Tax for my interest incoming from my Citibank account? I don't want the trouble to file one more tax form, that's TOO much truble.
All banks in my area are sucks!!! They want to charge $5 per month for the bill pay!!!

Be careful about interstate banking. A few years ago I tried opening up a checking account in Illinois branch of my bank when I lived in Michigan but luckily the accounts person told me I'd have to mail any deposits to the bank. You can't deposit money via an ATM unless you're in the same state as you opened your account in. Granted New Jersey and New York aren't that far away it may be something to keep in mind.

I work for the company that handles Chase, Citibank, and Wells Fargo's online banking products. I can't speak for their branch service, but if you are considering getting these to do online banking, rest assured that they are among the best in the business.
