I've been a happy Viatalk user for a few years.

www.viatalk.com

click on the "1 day sale" ad

The deal is the $189 annual plan with 1 year free
unfortunately, it's also plus taxes and fees and more taxes and fees -- at least for me it was.
Not really up on the competitors prices lately -- but this is a great deal, imho.

if skype is a competitor, they charge about $60 per year for unlimited nationwide inbound and outbound calls.

I've been using Ooma for over 2 years and it has been flawless. I paid $199 upfront for the hardware and have never had a bill. You can find the new Ooma Telo on sale for around $149 every so often.

Ooma now charges a monthly fee for new customers. And the word is even us people who have had it for years will start having to pay the same monthly charge by the end of the year.

I have Ooma as well, and it works great. I was able to port over my number I've had for 15 years as well. They don't charge a fee, but you do have to pay taxes, which the government enforces. I pay $4.34 per month. As part of this, I get 911 service. I bought a refurbished system so only paid $130 up front. Their are cheaper options, but Ooma is great if you want to keep an existing phone number and want a service that is similar to what you get from the phone company. There are other conveniences, such as voice mails sent to your email, and you can access (and blacklist) call logs online.

Just about any VOIP service will do all that. I use VOIP.MS and don't pay any taxes or fees. It's pay as you go, I dump $25 in my account every 3 months or so and am Very happy with the service. Kept my old number too.
