Its on sale for a reason. AS5 has long been surpassed by the newer generation of thermal pastes out there (MX4, shinetsu, NT-H1, etc). And by surpassed I mean you can expect a good 3-5C lower temps with a dab of NT-H1 instead of using a dab of AS5.

I had a stock of AS5 here, then I got some NT-H1 ($10 shipped for a tube that can prolly do 25 remounts) and saw the difference first hand. I threw away all my AS5 (about 10 tubes worth), all my TX1 (5 tubes), and all my ceramique (3 tubes).

Corsair&

^ those are from my tests. Look at the difference in the loaded temps  Almost 6°C for AS5 vs NT-H1.

lol who cares about sales for thermal paste? i still have my AS5 tube from 3 years ago. How many times do u use that stuff to be concerned about sales? each time u mount a cpu u only use a dab the size of a grain of rice....so 1 tube lasts years usually.

really? these guys found no difference in performance:

and so did these guys (vs AS5, AS ceramique there was a diff):

AS5 is already more than enough & cheaper than NT-H1. only thing NT-H1 has going for it is the lack of a curing time.:)

IC diamond is a good paste, excellent for GPU's I found out since its so thick. The only thermal paste i have ever hated and wanted a refund for was Tuniq TX-4, maybe I had a bad syringe of it but the stuff was so dry that even touching it flaked it off and the idea of "spreading" that cardboard'ish "paste" was a joke. It included a plastic card to spread it to and the best part was the paste would just stick to the card and then fall off - so much for spreading. For $12 it contained a small amount and cooled like shit to boot. NT-H1 which I got for free with my heatsink was great, equal to ICD from what I can tell.

AS5 is still ok and better than nothing but the next best thing for ease of use is ICD imo. Its easy to spread, cools extremely well and it is not conductive. NT-H1 is a more dry paste compared to it, still easy to apply, cools great, between the two it comes down if you prefer a dry paste or a more AS5 type of paste [which ICD is similar to].

Guys lets stop making a ASS out of ourselves LOL. No but seriously, all thermal paste is the same SH*T as far as Im concerned. You can use the one that comes with the processor or use ASS or your other compounds. Whats important is the contact between heatsink and CPU, and thermalpate fills the gaps,,, but still you need a good lapping to show a difference in temps from just changing thermal pastes to other brands.

My rig is no lapped,, which is the reason why core 0 and 1 are 8c higher then cores 2 and 3...........no thermal paste will fix that.

That's pretty much it to a certain extent. There are some truly bad thermal compounds out there, but the vast majority perform imperceivably close to the same. Most of the time it comes down to placebo effect and herd mentality. Slight changes in how the cooler is mounted or changes in ambient temps have a greater effect and would lead some to believe thermal compound is the cause. I've bought into the hype on thermal compounds before. Never again. If your thermal compound of choice gives you warm fuzzies related to its supposed performance then the more power to ya.

I built roughly 35 machines in 2008, using a little over 1 tube total of AS5.
