Experts Predict Acquittal of Milosevic

When U.N. prosecutors opened their case against Slobodan Milosevic (news - web sites) two years ago, they set out to get him convicted of genocide. The consensus today is, they failed.
Legal experts say prosecutors at the U.N. war crimes tribunal have assembled solid evidence on lesser charges against the former Yugoslav president. But acquittal on the genocide charge ? the crime of all crimes, experts say ? would have far-reaching implications.
Many Serbs would cheer it as vindicating their view that Serbia stands wrongly accused....

Why am I not surprised? It seems its so damn easy to get off on anything now.

If Milosevic is acquitted on the charge of genocide, then perhaps Madeline Albright may have exaggerated?

I'm sure others can think of more colorful labels. ;)

Indeed they can. Kosovo was a mini-Iraq.

When the UN is in charge...

Can you poeple not read? They will get convictions on smaller charges, but not genocide.

And alchemize, if Serbians were in charge, they would not have had a trial at all.

But I think thats the point, that they are not going to convict him of Genocide, which is the biggest thing they're trying to prove. Its like say if you arrested Hitler, and you could not convict him of genocide. Thats pretty screwed up. We know that Milosovic did it, he could have stopped it anytime but he didn't. He commanded the Serbian army that were backing up the Bosnian serbs. He was the one really in charge. And from reading the article it seems the biggest reason they cannot convict him on genocide is because they can't find the single order linking him to genocide. Well if I was an evil leader, do you think I would be stupid enough to give a direct order to commit genocide?

look up "innocent until proven guilty". You may be surprised to find out that it's how every normal country's judicial system works.

ummm, those mass graves? hello.

i guess he pulls an enron defense and simply claims he didn't know the person directly under him was conducting genocide, and then subsequently all the paperwork got mysteriously shredded by Arthur Anderson.

And you might be surprised to find out the great number of murders, rapists, and criminals that are free because of gaping loopholes and poor prosecutors. And this happens in just about every normal country.

You might be surprised at how many live near you

its a show trial! there is no "innocent" in a show trial! its all guilty guilty guilty! the point it to blame everything on someone so that the rest of the country, which participated too, is absolved! that was the whole point of these things to begin with, starting with the nurnberg trials!

Why do you think that this one in particular is a show trial?

Maybe they the Hague should have a dual trial system where celebrity dictators, even if they escape criminal charges of genocide may be sued for emotional damages by the families of those he slaughtered. Then he too can be negative 7 trillion dollars in debt.

After all OJ got free of criminal charges only to be found guilty under civil charges, no jail time but atleast they took away most of his bling.

it's the heritage of international war crimes tribunals. the point of them is to be show trials, and they're trying to make them into real trials, which is completely bizarre.

I suppose that's what their doing. If this was a show, they could easily interpret complicity in genocide as genocide.
