Just setup a new hard drive. Maxtor 30.7 gig 7200 rpm ATA 100, on a ATA 100 controller card. Did a fresh install of win98 SE, Got all my drivers loaded. tried to install DirectX 8.0 I get this error--
"Extracting file failed. It is most likely caused by low memory(low disk space for swapping file)or corrupt Cabinet file."
I now have win98 installed thinking that SE was the problem, no matter what OS I install I get this error. I have 256 megs memory
and I know space isnt the problem. Anybody know what my problem is?
Could it be the hard drive, controller card? I would'nt think so. Thanks for the replies in advance!

let me ask you this.......and you probably have done this.........have you checked to make sure the install file(s) for directx aren't corrupt?

Yes, I tried the file I had on my backup disk first, then went to the Directx site and D.L it again, same thing!

Problem solved! Tried the switching cables to the mobo, that did'nt work.
Decided to put the cdrom and burner cable on the controller card(from mobo)That did the trick. Anybody know why that worked?

I have had trouble with my maxtor with regards to the cable as well. They just seem to be picky... IMHO...
