I was considering getting a refurb T40 from IBM. What experiences have any of you had that have bought refurbs? Obviously the warranty has dropped from 3 to 1 year but how messed up are the exteriors? any other negative issues that came up?

i think the biggest thing you have to watch out for is dead pixels. i figure scratched exteriors people can live with. dead pixels on the other hand can't

They probably have dead pixels. I bought brand NEW 2 T40's and both had 1 dead pixel each. I am keeping one and returning one. I bet the one I return ends up for sale as refurbished. It's up to you to decide if you can live with imperfections.

And if it has a dead pixel you can also return the refurb
as you can see not only the refurbs are subject to dead pixels as you got 2 of them.

I got a refurb one and it was fine except for a dead pixel near the middle of the screen. I returned it and just got a brand new one today. it too has a FVCKIN dead pixel. wtf is with IBMs and the pixel problem?

I think manufacturers are trying to cut costs by using lower grade panels where more dead pixels are acceptable. In IBM's case, the threshold for determining if a Panel is defective is somewhere around 8 pixels.

If consumers are adamant in refusing items with defective pixels, this will send a message to manufacturers.
