Experienced Windows Media Extender help?

When using the Xbox 360 as a Windows Media Extender, what's the network overhead vs. playing media through Windows Media?

A buddy of mine has been playing .mp4 and .mp3 files through his Xbox 360 without much problem, but when we try setting up the Media Extender, scrolling through the options/menus is extremely slow, to the point of making it virtually useless. We have dumped the wireless, going wired and still getting the same type of results.

When checking the network performance meters in WMC, the wireless goes to about the third bar, before entering the "suitable for television" range. When we wire it, the meter will jump almost to the top of the "suitable for television" range, but never into the "HD" range and then it bounces like a rubber ball between levels similar to the wireless results and back into the top of the "suitable..." range. Should the meter even be bouncing like that? We're starting to wonder if the router is just bad.

I'd check/replace router & wiring.
