Experience with Wireless PCI cards?

Just curious - I would think that with the antenna sitting behind the steel case (and possibly under or inside a desk), reception would be lousy. what has your experience been?

EDIT: reccomendations for or warnings against specific models - preferably Wireless-G or faster - would be appreciated, too.

This one has an external antenna with a decently long cable. It's been working great for me, iin Windows and OpenBSD.

PCI cards are usually Very good.

However your notion about the Antenna is correct.

1. Always buy a PCI with removable Antenna.

2. If the source and the client are not in the same room you might start look for an Antenna with an extension cable so it can be put above the "Box".

3. The Edimax in n0cmonkey link is a good deal since it comes with extended Antenna and it stating to be WPA2 capable (AES).

My netgear 108 mbs cards work well in one of my pcs and also the laptop. Get 72-108 throughout entire house.

You can build a directional can antenna for poor reception area. I've only tested D-Link and Belkin PCI card. D-Link is a little better. Keep the cable under 4ft. Longer length will result in significant signal drop.

I have a NETGEAR WGT624 Wireless Firewall Router with my personal computer connected directly to it and I have 2 other computers with NETGEAR WG311T IEEE 802.11g PCI Wireless Adapter up to 108Mbps Data Rates 64/128-Bit WEP, WPA. And let me tell ya so far so good!
