Wow. I saw a video earlier this week showing how close they fly to each other but this really brings it home.

Its an illusion.
They are not flying that close.
In real life the wing tip is 18 inches away from canopy.
Not the 16 inches it appears to be in the video.

Just hear to bring the reality check.

I dunno, it was pretty obvious there was some unsteady movement...I wouldn't be surprised if the gap varied plus or minus by an eighth of an inch or so.

I blame Shakey Cam.
Ever since Bourne Identity came out nobody can keep anything steady on video.

(Disclaimer: I netflixed Bourne Identity a few days ago so I'm on a shakey cam kick.

side note: Saw it in the theater when it came out. Enjoyed the second viewing. I rarely watch things twice)

If you watch the video the pilot states that they are within 6" for certain maneuvers.

These guys are pretty amazing and you just know that every once in a while the separation drops to zero. Fortunately, at those relative speeds minor contact can be tolerated with little or no damage.

In 1985 I went out to Dayton Ohio to do some robot programming while working at IBM and during the weekend they had the Wright Paterson airshow that featured the Blue Angles. Just a few weeks before the show the Angles had an accident and one of them was killed so it was by no means certain they would show up and perform. They did, but one of the solo pilots screwed up and flew down the active runway, a runway still being used by commercial aircraft. Thankfully nothing bad happened, but even these guys can get rattled.

BTW, if you're ever in the Dayton area a visit to the Wright Pat Air Museum is a must. Perhaps the coolest plane they have is the sole remaining XB-70 -- freaking awesome.

Oh.
I thought that was a subtle dick joke. Guess I was wrong.
Guess I should watch the video sober.
(Will re-watch tonight....but not promising anything)
