Expensive Memory Worth it?

My question is whether it is worth it to drop $260 on a gig of nice TCCD Ram or $160 on a gig of value ram at cl 2.5. From what I hear the latency will have a pretty small effect, and setting a divider on the athlon 64's doesnt matter that much because of their on-die memory controller. So I was wondering if someone with nice ram and an athlon 64 could underclock their ram it and set a divider with their cpu, say 2:3 divider if your mobo can handle 300fsb.

Edit: BTW, I am planning on an athlon 64 system for gaming, I dont care about synthetic memory bandwidths etc.

Also if you just straight out know the answer you could just tell me. 🙂
