Got an E-mail saying I'm eligible to participate in a settlement. You can take cash or something like 2.7 times more in expedia credit. Score! I must have booked at least 20 trips in that time frame.

http://www.servicefeessettlement.com/

"A proposed Settlement has been made on behalf of a nationwide class of consumers who booked hotel stays through Expedia from January 10, 2001 through June 11, 2008 and paid a "Tax Recovery Charge" and a "Service Fee." If approved, the Settlement will provide for the distribution to Class Members of $123.4 million in cash payments and Expedia Settlement Credit that can be used for hotel reservations and "package" reservations that include hotel reservations."

you know from the few times I used those "ticket saver" sites, I would just use them to see the cheapest and buy the tickets directly from the airliners site. Those sites always added extra fees that ended up costing you more.

I use them mainly for package deals for hotels/resorts/flights, cheaper than doing them separately.

You won't receive anything at all from a class action settlement. Except higher prices the next time you buy something from the company.

Usually 20% less for me when you do the flight+hotel package.

Expedia doesn't have a product. They are a service. And if they try to raise their rates above and beyond Orbitz, Travelocity, Priceline, Hotwire, etc.. etc.. then nobody will use them. So, you're wrong.

I've used Expedia a couple of times during the alloted time frame.

I wonder how much this will amount to...Most likely, as usual, the lawyers will get MILLIONS of $$$ and the rest of us will get a 50 cent coupon...

If you go the credit route 70% of the fee you paid will be returned. For as many trips as I had it's absolutely worth it. Won't be a lot, but it could be $1000+

I always love when people get outraged over lawyers taking a cut of a settlement in which 95% of the people getting in on the settlement didn't even know they were wronged by the company until they heard about the lawsuit brought forward by the lawyers they are so outraged at.

I don't see why that isn't justification for outrage when the lawyers get a massive cut of the settlement vs what everyone else gets.

I'm not against lawyers getting paid and I know it cost money to argue on my behalf but when half of a 100million dollar settlement goes to legal costs...

That's an awfully big assumption you're making there.

That's pretty much my point. Why do the lawyers get the lion's share in class-action settlements?
Many times, no one was really "wronged," but, as in this case, was perhaps overcharged on some kind of fee...
Are there class-action lawsuits that perhaps have real merit? Of course, but it seems like they're the exception rather than the rule...and the lawyers just file the other ones to make money...not to actually make anyone "whole" for their damages.

1) How many hours did they spend on the case
2) How much money did they spend on experts, other shit
3) How many cases do they win vs lose, after all they only make money if they win

It's not just Expedia, Hotwire got nailed as well.
It all stems from some tax/surcharge they collected on hotel bookings.

I am fully expecting similar settlements from Orbitz, Priceline and Travelocity as well.

Wow, I actually used Expedia (albeit just once) in that time frame. However, it was only for booking a plane flight, no hotel rooms or anything.

Just bumping as today is the last day to sign up for the credit or cash.
I didn't even know about this settlement, I was just going deleting old emails and found out about this yesterday(!). The settlement credit should be a decent amount if you've made quite a few reservations. It's worth 2.17x the cash settlement.

I got anal raped by Expedia.ca two weeks ago. I posted a lengthy rant about that. They basically refused to help me after my flights kept getting cancelled and hung up on me when I asked how I would go about getting my money back. I'm in the process of putting in claim through travel insurance.

I think I'd rather pay more to deal with the airline and hotel directly. I was doing that anyway.

Outrage not found. All I saw was a comment.

Thanks, I completed a form. I know I booked a few big trips on Expedia over the years so hopefully, I'll get some sort of usable credit.

Usually if you go to the service desk for the airline servicing your ticket they can help you much quicker and easier. Just in case you didn't know it, I've seen that be a lot more effective in my day. :)
