Expected performance gain from PII 350 to PIII 800

Hi, I have decided to replace my PII 350 with a PIII 800 (Socket) on my Abit BX6-II.

I need to pay $270 to $300 CDN for this upgrade. So, I need to know what kind of performance gain I can see from this CPU upgrade. I run mostly bussiness apps.

Please don't point me to the reviews. I read them all. I cannot find one that compares Pentium II 350 and Pentium III 800.

Can some gurus give me some hints on this? Is it really worth the money for this?

In case you need my system config, here it is...

Pentium II 350 Mhz (just told you)
Abit BX6-II (two slots)
128MB PC100 RAM
TNT2 Ultra 32MB running at 1024x768x16
IBM ATA33 8.4GB HD
Some 14 USB devices attached...

At least a 100% increase,200% more than likely.I went from a p2/400 to a cel366@550 and saw an increase,a noticeable one. Then I went from the 550 to a cel-2/633,saw about the same increase, now I've overclocked that cpu to 950,and have about a 50% increase in that. Also now would be a great time to get another 128meg of ram, prices are low,and that will give you an increase as well.

Can you say "whiplash"? I would definately agree with the assumption of between 100% and 200% performance increase given the rest of your system. Given memory prices right now, I'd also agree that it would be a great time to add another 128MB of RAM, but not if you're running Win 9x. Win 9x doesn't like more than 128MB RAM, use NT 4.0 or Win 2K if you want (or need) more than 128 MB RAM.

Wait wah?? Win9x doesnt like more than 128 ram?? I could have sworn I had read that the 9x line couldnt handle more than 512 not 128.

Anyone else confirm or deny this?

well handle is a funny word - benchmarks prove that a jump from 128 to 256 make a noticable diff, but jumping that up to 512 didnt really show that much of a difference.

now - Win2000 zooms with 512mb!

so w/ memory prices i would go to 256 anyways, because the new MS OS WILL manage mammory better

while the increase in performance will be substantial, I understand that the EB version will perform better than the E version of the CPU due to the higher FSB (133 vs 100)between similarly clocked processors. However, the E version has more headroom for overclocking.

caboob, usbnuts is looking to keep the BX6-2 and PC-100 memory, so the 800EB is not a good idea.

Zenmervolt, your memory recommendation is way out of line. NT4.0 doesn?t even support USB, and can you guarantee win2k will provide full support of usbnuts? 14 USB devices without knowing what they are?

Oh yes. One more question... If I have some PC 133 memory, will 800EB run on my Abit BX6-II?

(I tried a few missions in Combat Simulator and downloaded QIII Team Arena. Man, my system's slow as hell.)

it's hard to say, if you run at 133 Mhz FSB, your AGP vid card will run out of spec since your board only supports a 2/3 FSB:AGP divider and may only be able to use a PCI vid card.

get at t-bird 800 and a new mobo for just a little more and you can use that pc133 just fine, not to metion some other nice preformace upgrades, like udma66/100 and/or raid, agpx4, a 200mhz ddr fsb, and the fact that you can probably get the 800 to over 1ghz with little effort:)
