Expansion card will block other slots?

How can one know if a card, typically a video card will physically block other expansion slots? I plan on building new system, but want some room for expansion and upgrades. Specifially the PCI slots.

Are the slim profile video cards meant to not block access to other slots? And non-slim profile care will block access?

Are there any standard height specifications for expansion cards?

Well the most common problem is with all video cards that takes 2 slots to use.
