The ExoMars rover will launch a few years after MSL, but will be less than half the cost.
MSL will launch earlier, but over twice the cost and 10 times the size.

So which one do you expect to contribute more, and which is more advance.

MSL. The ESA does all kinds of cool stuff, but they don't ever seem to let the public know about it.

The Mars Exploration Rovers returned data almost every day, and it was made available to the public within 24hrs most of the time. Mars Global Surveyor also returned a lot of data, and a lot of it was made public quickly too. The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has its excellent HiRISE camera, and to go with it are HiPOD (picture of the day) and HiBlog. Hell, even new Voyager data is still made public on a regular basis, though not too frequently, as the Voyager team and budget have been pared down significantly from their original levels.

ESA meanwhile doesn't have nearly that level of public outreach. Venus Express entered orbit of Venus in April, and there have been very few press releases concerning anything at all about its observations or science. I believe I have seen only two such releases. MER - 12 press releases just this year.

That's the public outreach portion. Science? I'll admit, I know less about Exomars' capabilities than I do of MSL's. I have seen information that it's supposed to have some kind of drill to get below the surface. But come on, MSL has a laser that can vaporize the surface of rocks, and it's nuclear powered! :D I do wish Exomars luck though. More science is always good.
