Exhausted because I sleep too much?

I used to stay up until 1 am and wake up at around 6:30 AM, and have done so for years. Now, mostly because my wife oversleeps in the winter (too cold to go out), I'm sleeping much more than I ever did. Sometimes 8 hours, sometimes close to 9.

A few weeks of this and I'm exhausted all the time...

I know the solution is easy, but anyone else feel zapped of energy if you sleep more than 6 or 7 hours?

Always happens to me. I get bad headaches and just general malaise if I get more than 7 hours of sleep.

It can happen as you've messed with your sleep cycle.

Yup. I think it also has a lot to do with when you finally wake up. If you're in a certain part of the sleep cycle, you feel much less rested when you wake up.

Yep. Even though I'm jobless I've been trying not to sleep my life away. I go to bed at 11pm at the latest. If I "sleep in" until 9 or 10 I'll feel more tired later in the day. Warm bed, heater on makes falling back to sleep easy.

My body has been waking me up around 7:45 -8 so I've been making myself get outta bed at that time and I feel better for it.

Indeed - when I was out of work my schedule was different, but I still slept the same amount of hours (I'd stay up until 3 AM and wake up at 9/9:30).

I hate going to bed so early but we got a heated mattress pad and, man, it's a cozy place to watch tv, and it's too cold to go out on a weekday.

I've been trying to find a source for these year long daily headaches that I've been having.

I've been unemployed for about a year as well. I've been staying up until 4am and sleeping in until noon.. waking up with a headache. Taking about 6 excedrin a day. These things just wont go away. I've recently come to realize, if I set my alarm to about an hour before I naturally wake up, I don't wake up with a headache.

It's all starting to make sense now.. I've tried everything from taking vitamins to different diets to exercising. It just never dawned on me that my sleep habit is causing this.

And I'm now waiting on an interview from somebody who is on vacation! aghh!

Oversleeping is bad for me as well. I don't get headaches or anything like that, but I feel lethargic for hours after I get out of bed.

Do you just stay in bed until your wife gets up, or are you truly asleep? How long have you been getting 8 to 9 hours of sleep? I know that if I sleep too long (usu. 9+ hours) for a day or two, I feel more exhausted, but I would think that a few weeks on an 8-hour sleep schedule would get your body accustomed to it and should result in more energy.

Well, I usually shoot up 2 hours before the alarm clock goes off.. Oddly, on the weekends I wake up to get started on housework (while my wife sleeps in), but on the weekdays I just go back to sleep until my wife wakes up.

I used to wake up and mill around - check email, have my morning cup of coffee and watch the news in the living room.. But now it's chilly so a warm bed is tempting.

Yep, I have headaches but the worst feeling is just being half asleep all the time.

Luckily the fix is pretty easy - I'll start staying up for Conan! 😉

Exercise more, sleep less. Or sleep 6-7 hours at night, take an afternoon nap (if possible).

I'm comfortable getting around 6-8 hours sleep, with 8 1/2 being like the perfect number (any more and I'm tired; rarely get this amount of sleep), and 5 1/2 being absolute minimum for me to not feel tired and weird in the morning without drinking a lot of coffee or tea.
