I have rust/hole in my exhaust stystem for about 2 months, I knew I did due to the noise. Anyway, I finally looked under the car (right where the tip comes out on the back) and the huge cylinder has a hole and rust on it.

So, I know I need a replacement. I'm trying to find stock parts online, but all are after market. How do I find something that is quiet as possible?

Also, average price looks to be around $300. I am also going to have to get this installed since I have no idea how to do it, so I'm guessing that's going to be another what, $300 in labor?

How much of it is bad? If it's just the muffler that's rotted, you can just cut / unbolt (good luck) the old muffler and replace it with a new one. If you have multiple rotted spots then take it to few places that do exhausts and get a quote.

I'm sure they could have your muffler done for much less than $300 labor. I'm sure if you looked it's probably just bolted on. I had a whole new exhaust put on a 65 mustang I use to have for like $300. That was 7-8 years ago though. Take it to a exhaust shop and don't act like such a noob or they'll rape you.

Yeah after looking it is my rear muffler that needs replacing. Any tips on not sounding like a noob? And will it be cheaper to take it to a muffler shop rather than my local repairman? I've been going to him for years and he's a honest, reliable guy with good service.
This is assuming I can't replace myself.

You should be able to get estimates over the phone.

I'd just take it to your regular guy. If you trust him and are happy with his work, give him the job. If he doesn't want to do the work, perhaps he can recommend someone else.

If regular is a supermodel wife and pr0n star girlfriend, with 3 houses and a few Lambos, then yes. I mean this is AT right?^_^

Anyway I am a college student, so $ is important to me. Thanks for the advice so far.

If you really want to cut down on the cost, find the right-size muffler (inlet and outlet diameter) online, buy it yourself, then just take it to an exhaust shop or wherever you think would have the best deal and tell them you need your muffler replaced and you have a new one. I can't imagine it being very expensive if you take that route unless they discover something else that's wrong with the exhaust system.

honestly, replacing a muffler isn't all that tough and requires only the most basic of tools. Its a great way to learn a little about wrenching and will save you $$$. and if you somehow screw up, you can still go to your mechanic and let him do it.

what make/model is your car?

96 Honda Accord, Anniversary Edition (<-- only added that b/c when I looked online for mufflers, some sites had that listed)

Muffler shop and $100 should do you good. Or find a used OEM one in the junkyard/craigslist/honda-tech.com for $25-$50, it will be bolt on and look nicer.

assuming you have a 1996 honda accord LX with a 2.2 I4,
http://search.autopartsworld.com/autosites/apw/webparts.jsp?product=163-551

if not,

http://www.autopartsworld.com/honda_parts/accord/muffler/1996.html

one of these should fit.

I'd say around 150$ all told if you get gaskets, hangers, etc (you should)

from the looks of it, all you need to do is put the rear end on jackstands, unbolt the rear muffler, unhook it, and then install the new one. If you don't have the tools, I'm sure you can find a friend who has what you need.

Thanks, I will look into this. I guess once I do more research, just buy it and then just attempt to put it on and if I can't, just take it to a shop. I mean if I can't get it off, then I'll know what to do right away :D

Thanks again for the help.

Oh, I think I have the crappiest edition (DX) - I have rollup windows and 'manual' locks.

I have a '96 Accord, and a local shop quoted me $40 to replace just the muffler. An aftermarket unit, though just as quiet as stock. I went ahead and replaced the entire exhaust from the cat back though, as the pipes were in bad shape also. All Walker hardware from Rockauto. With a new stainless tip, hardware, hangars, etc... it was about $300. Quiet as the day it left the factory, and should last another 10+ years. Entirely bolt on, took about an hour.
