My exhaust is finally biting the dust. It's on my 81 Z28 camaro and I was driving along and heard it banging around. I fixed it up with some chicken wire for now and I want that to last as long as possible because I know it can't be cheap to put a dual exhaust on. Anyone have any ideas how much it will run? I think it's shot on both sides.

My guess is it's the muffler(s) and and not the tail pipes themselves.

I'd be supprised if the pipes aren't stainless steel.

For the pipes to be "gone" on a car that age would be rare in this day of S/S exhaust pipes.

Mufflers will be MUCH cheaper!!

I doubt the system has any stainless, if it was made in 1981.

It could be just a broken hangar....you'll have to crawl under it to see.

I don't think it will cost that much! For my old Town Car, it was only about $140.00 from the converters back for a single exhaust out the door. The parts alone were only slightly less. I insisted on using Goerlich's pipes, but they talked me into their Walker stuff. It didn't hold up that long. It was done by a small chain called Rainbow Muffler. I got the same price quoted from a few places. I doubt a dual exhaust would be twice that price.

Its a 81 Z28. How do you figure it would be stainless? Just driving over a dirt road would tell you if it was stainless. Makes a unique sound when rocks ping off it.

I'm pretty sure it's not stainless as the exhaust is probably 3 years old. It was replaced sometime before I got the car. The mufflers are in the middle of the car and the exhaust pipes where they wrap around the rear end and gas tank are gone. I can put my finger through them in on the right side. There are 2 clamps on the rear portion on each side and this is where the pipes are in the worst shape. I wonder if my mufflers are salvageable because they look in great shape compared to everything else.

I think if the mufflers are OK, then new tailpipes should only cost like $100 or so, installed.

Let me guess, do they use salt on the roads in the winter there?

"Your exhaust goes out the door?!?"

Yeah well, it's cheaper that way! LOL

I bet you could get somebody to warrant the muffler out, whether you bought it from them or not. It's less than $40.00, probably more like a $16.00 part, depending who made it. They make their money on the pipes.

My wife is always complaining about my exhaust problems, especially when we have split pea soup or beans. Cucumbers always seem to exhaust out the intake, but the peas and beans always produce a rearward thrust.

Do you think I need new hangers?

New hangars? No, but a new cadillac converter may help :p

tons of it!

I believe midas did the last muffler/exhaust install but I won't go to them, too much $$.
