Exempt/non-exempt employees

Can anyone explain what makes an employee exempt, or non-exempt? What's the purpose of the law? I'm talking about the thing where companies have to make certain employees hourly instead of salary.

So corporations pushed for the law? What makes someone exempt? I don't think exempt = salary. I thought there was a certain criteria to be met that makes someone expempt or non-exempt, and if that is the case, then they become salary/wage.

Salary isn't bad.

Most people with Salary I know can work under 40 hours and still get paid the full amount. They get paid days when hourly people don't. They have more freedom too.

Salaried can totally suck if your company sucks.

But it can also be much better than hourly. Everyone I know in a career job, is on Salary and for them the benefits are much better.

I'm salaried and its pretty good. The company just expects me to work 40 hours a week, whenever. If I work 60 hours one week, I can work 20 hours the next week (within reason, its expected I will get my sh|t done of course).

Agreed. I'm salary and I work harder at times but there are also times when I am not so busy and can come and go as I please. Nobody is watching to see what time I come in or how long my lunch break was.

yup, exactly. when i was salaried, i could finish my work fast, then get the hell out. or take a 2 hr lunch. my hourly rate turned out to be about 20-25% more since i rarely had to put in 40hr/wk.

Right now I'm on a contract salary job, but...how about this...I have to turn in TIME CARDS every week, and I have to work the same number of hours every week (at least on paper). I had more flexibility when I was hourly, but at least now I get benefits.
