excuse my ignorance.. I have a P4A 2.4Ghz cpu

my HSF drowns out my 2 80mm fans + PSU so I am looking to replace it - i can hear it from almost 2 rooms away.

Everest home edition is showing it as a Northwood A80532.

How do I tell what socket it is ? Was planning on getting a Zalman from Newegg, unless you guys have any other ideas.

Get the Zalman 7000AlCu. It will work fine with your P4, and it's nice and quiet.

If it's a northwood, with out a doubt, its a socket 478.
