i wasn't too impressed with Cozumel. did get to see the Mayan Ruins and do some scooba diving, but the area is so poor, and the beaches were kinda skanky.

I went there. The big thing to do is snorkeling. It's a pretty nice place. Very touristy though. You can shop there too. I don't remember how much it cost.

we went to a local seaquarium and did some scuba(no license required because it was only to 12' depth) in a tank and fed the fish and stingrays and fed sharks and snapping turtles from behind plexiglass.

it was cool. we have a video tape of it.

did you like shopping there? it was like they saw "Americans" and begged you to come into their shops.

I was underwhelmed by Cozumel. I enjoyed my time at the ruins much more. Unless you are an experienced SCUBA diver then you arent going to get the most out of Cozumel.

We stopped there for a day on our cruise and a friend and I went golfing. We met up with the rest of the crew and spent the day and Carlos and Charlies and had a blast.

I don't like shopping anywhere :) The didn't harass anybody, it's just your typical tourist place. You buy trinkets and souvenirs. You can haggle with the shop owners as the sticker value is pretty much overpriced.

I am an experienced scuba diver, my fiance isn't. But I figured on my dives I'd set her up at the spa on the resort. I am trying to plan other things like taking a ferry to Mexico and seeing some better Myan Ruins like Talum, but it seems impossible to find any information on this.

I was on a cruise and that was one of our stops. My wife and I went on a little party boat over to Playa Del Sol. It was fun, and I'd go there again.

I recently did the exact same thing.

Also, Carlos and Charlies is a great place to go.

I have been to Cozumel a few times. Scuba is fun, but without a license, others are right
you are going to miss the best that the diving in Cozumel has to offer. There is some
snorkeling available, but most of the comments i have heard about the snorkeling, haven't
been that favorable, but I believe that is mostly due to the water around cozumel being kinda
rough.

Arrived there via cruise ship as well.. thankfully didn't have to stay overnight cause it didn't have too much to offer... we roamed the beaches and shops, but didn't do the mayan ruins because we had heard that it was a total bore.

Have any of you travelled farther abroad? There's so much more to see in this world than a U.S. tourist spot.

Take a day trip to Chichen Itza ruins, much better than Tulum. Tulum is pretty small and you'll see all of it in about a half hour; it's only well known because it's a coastal site which is rare for the Mayans. Chichen Itza is much bigger and more spectacular and has the great pyramid.

Also, if your fiance likes to snorkel, take her to Hidden Worlds (hiddenworlds.com). You can snorkel (or dive) the cenotes, which a very awesome and I highly recommend you don't pass up the opportunity. You might combine this with Tulum since they are so close to each other and you can do both the same day.

A day trip to Xcaret (xcaretcancun.com) would be fun also. It's the best eco-park in the region, has great beach, lots to do and has a terrific cultural show in the evenings.

In Playa del Carmen, which is on the mainland directly across from Cozumel, there's lots of shops and stores, good bars and restaurants on the 5th Avenue.

Also, there's horseback riding and ATV jungle excursions in the area and day trips into the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve.

I don't know of any sites you can check online for availability and pricing but you resort will have most, if not all of these activities available at their tour desk. If not, just take the ferry across to Playa del Carmen early in the morning and you'll see plenty of tour kiosks around that will be able to set you up. Also, you'll be able to set up tours at the dock in Cozumel or with the staff on the ferry itself.

You'd be surprised, many islands in the Caribbean really aren't big U.S tourist spots.

Last time I went to the Dominican Republic, there were as many if not more Europeans
vacationing there. There are also other Islands that attract more Europeans that Americans.

I have also travelled further abroad, including South America, Europe, Northern Africa.

However I will not, that you make it sound like a U.S tourist spot is bad.
But to be honest, when I want to go on a relaxing vacation to a warm
climiate, it really doesn't bother me when all the locals speak English (be it broken),
and many of the people expect Americans so I don't have to worry about the little
things that might become a problem in an area where only locals are.
