Do you need to have Windows 2003 server installed in a system before you can install exchange server 2003?

anyone have any good links for free online tutorials? i can get the free trial package to play with but books at the moment i cant afford at moment.

Nope, E3k will run on 2000 and 2003. If you have an Exchange 2000 server running on 2000, upgrade Exchange first! Exchange 2000 and 5.5 will not run on Windows Server 2003.

oh ok but the OS must be a server operating system like windows 2000 server not pro or windows xp correct?

Another question. What do you guys recommend Windows Server 2003 and Exchange Server 2003 or Small business Server 2003, which i hear includes exchange correct?

its all a testing environment for my own learning experience, probably about 5 computers in all, but would like to mess with the outlook over web features.

i ask which one because microsoft has trial software kits which you can get you just have to pay for shipping so i dont know which one to choose.

Windows server 2003

or

Small business server 2003.

SBS comes with lots of wizards and stuff to make it easier for you to setup. It shields you from a lot of technical details. If you want to get into the nitty gritty to see how it works get Win2k3 + Exchange 2k3.
