Exchange/Outlook question

I'd like to setup an Exchange server and use it through outlook...simple enough right?

Well I want to be able to use it remotely as well (not from on the network, but through the internet)...so I would just use the POP3 support, right?

Well I also want to be able to sync my contacts/etc. through it as well. Thus my question...can I use it as an exchange server remotely, or will I be opening myself to all sorts of problems? Or can I sync my calendar/etc. to outlook through some other means, such as IMAP maybe?
 
I have IMAP and POP3 setup on our Exchange 2003 server.

BTW, you can probably also setup a VPN and still connect with Microsoft Exchange Server protocol.
