Exchange 2003 help?

We want to share contacts and calendars using Outlook 2003 as the client, and it seems like Exchange is the way to go. Our domain is running on NT4, but we have a test Win Server 2003 sitting here that we figured we could put Exchange on.

Beginning the installation, I'm getting pretty confused here. Its saying it requires an Active Directory (which we don't have/use) and needs to be a member of a domain, etc. We already run a linux mail server in-house; we just want a central server to be able to use some of the collaboration tools that Exchange/Outlook offer (shared contacts, tasks, calendars, etc.). I'm gettin the feeling that to do those, Outlook/Exchange is going to require Exchange as the mail server, too, and we don't want that. Is there a "barebones" way to just have Exchange install so that we can share those basic components? Thanks!

NO, there is not. You must also run the DOMAIN and Forrest Prep utility to change the active directory. Exchange utilizes AD so you must have a domain controller.

Ok, thanks. We're not really at a point where we are moving our NT domain to a win2kx active directory domain......would I be able to set up a separate domain with active directory, etc. just to put exchange on? Would the outlook users then need logins specifically for that domain??

I guess the last rub of it is....if I do get Exchange up and going and able to share calendars and contacts and stuff, are the users also forced to use Exchange as their email server, or could they still get email from our linux mail server? We're not really looking at this time to replace our linux solution with Exchange.....yet.

you could add an email account in outlook that uses your linux mail server be it POP3, http, imap, etc. How many people are in your company? A great product all in 1 package with great features is Small Business Server 2003, comes with exchange, sharepoint, outlloo2003, shared fax services and great remote capabilties.

you can email me if you would like some more information about it or some help.
