I installed Exchange Server 2000 into my Active Directory Domain. I had to run the Domain and Forest prep to do this.

When I installed Exchange, I set the server up as the First and Primary information store.

This Exchange server has died (hardware failure) and I have had to rebuild.

Now I am ready to install Exchange again but it will not let me because it says that I already have a First and Primary information store.

How do I remove all references to the old Exchange or more importantly - how can I install a new copy and use it?

Thanks!

This link shoutld help.

It is a PITA, but I followed it and it worked for me. I screwed up my first Exchange install and this document took care of it.

Thank you for the link. At first, I thought you were barking up the wrong tree, but after reading all the way down, I see what you mean about a PITA. If I read that correctly, I have the potential to screw up quite a bit by trying to fix this problem.

Thanks for the pointer! Help is always appreciated.

Yeah....I think what happened with me was running a dcpromo and changing my domain then trying to reinstall Exchange. It didn't like that.

What was bizarre about the whole thing was after blowing out the keys and directories it still never asked for the product id again. It must tuck that away somewhere deep in the registry.

Oh well, Exchange isn't for the timid that's for sure.

I just rebuilt a server. After a format and clean install, it never asked for the product key. M$ must be slipping.
