Excessively bright headlights on car

Is it really a necessity for automakers to make them that fvcken bright? Some guy in a Avalance truck changed into my lane and in the process blinded me for a moment that. That thing was so bright, my eyes were whited out for a second. Next thing I see was bright red lights so I stepped on the brake and barely avoid rear ending the car in front of me.

You're just assuming they're stock. I find that stock headlights are bright enough to be distracting, but not blinding.

I agree there should be some kind of lumens limit on the amount of light a headlight can put on while in the city. No one needs headlights bright enough to give you a suntan thru your rearview mirror. I also agree trucks are the worst!

It's an unfortunate reality.

To my knowledge, there's no law that says how bright they can/can't be, but there are laws dictating how the beam should spread and be aimed.

I also hear that there's an effort afoot to require these gargantucars to mount them lower to the ground.

There ARE limits. Notice how most new cars' driving lights (fog lights) are turned off when you go into high beam mode?

f*k it, its super tall suvs with headlights that suck worst.

Definately. Not even the most improperly aimed HID is as bad as a tall SUV right behind you.

By fog lights now blind people ever since I put silverstar bulbs in them - they also output nearly as much light as my headlights, effectively doubling my visibility area.

That said, I drive around with them constantly on, pissing people off is just a secondary benifet...........😛

i have never had an issue with DRLs and i drive a very low sitting car. Just another thing for people with too much time on their hands to whine about.

Are you kidding? I have an old Toyota Corolla with no natural tint on any window. All the new SUVs are incredibly blinding. I have a slight astigmatism too so it just multiplies the effect. In my other car, my rear window tints are so strong that a truck high beaming me wouldn't effect me though.

Drive in front of a few truckers and you'll get the same level of blindness. It's the height of the headlights and that's not regulated in the USA. It's really sad though, I have been finding myself in front of cars with frame damage and one headlight that just blinds me through the side mirrors/rearviews.... until I speed up to avoid being blinded.

I don't think it's DRLs though, most cars have those at a fraction of the power that regular headlights use (at least my 97 Jetta has that "dimmed DRL" feature).

For people like you, it's almost worth it for me to install some stadium lights in the back of my car.

I like to strategically adjust the mirrors on my car when being tailgated by an SUV so as to redirect some of that light back into their eyes-- 😀

How the f are your fogs blinding?!:| Anyway, the problem with GM vehicles is that the DRL's utilize the high-beam lenses/bulbs, not the low beams. So when idiots drive around at night not realizing that they have the DRL's on and not their headlights its blinding. You'd think people would notice if the dash lights are off

I have an untinted MINI Cooper. No problems.

There are a lot of stupid people that don't realize their headlights are misaimed too. They're insanely bright because they're pointed right in your friggin face!

And there are fscktards out there that just drive around with their high beams on... some of them don't even know that it blinds people and some of them are such dumb@$$es that they use highs because their lows are "dim" (or burnt out)

I don't think it's the brightness as much as the direction they are pointing or the height of the offending vehicle and you.
Bingo. It's surprising, but a significant portion (more than 40% I think, can't remember where I read it) of cars have their headlights improperly aligned from the factory and no-one bothers to align them later on.

Bingo
Bingo X2.

About SUVs/trucks/vans (how come people conveniently forget the latter 2?) ... I think there should be an obligation to point their lamps at an even lower angle.

<-- SUV driver who also drives an Accord.

you guys whining about DRL's need to take your head's out of your butts. the fact that they piss you off is an indication that they are doing their job, which is making sure you notice the vehicle. they are not bright enough to have the slightest impact on your vision during the day and they are DIMMER than the real lights on a car, so what's the big deal?

conjor, those links are ridiculous. DRL's don't cause glare for me, and i wear big-time-glare glasses (i can often see my own eyeball reflecting in them). maybe these people need to get their eyes examined. not only that, i have to laugh at the "argument" that once all cars have DRL's that they will cease to be effective because people will be used to them. right, so because we're "used" to cars being brighter and easier to see, we'll stop seeing them? what the hell? i don't magically not see school buses because they're all painted bright yellow so that we can see them. i don't magically not see motorcycles because they have their lights on.

the only problem i can see from them is that sometimes people forget to turn on their real lights (don't they ever look at their instrument clusters and notice that they can't see their gauges?). that and that they make your car more noticeable to the cops (again, simply because they are doing their job).
