Doing Ab work will not get rid of flab. To get rid of flab you run your ass off. To get tone once you get the flab off you do ab work.

For abs to show you like a six-pack have to have sub-10% body fat. Keep that in mind if you're planning on a six or eight pack.

Stop eating fatty foods. Second, do lots of ab work. I have run consistently for a year and have toned legs, but my stomach still needs work. Thirdly, get lots of cardiovascular workout. Try running 3 miles a day, that should do it. Tae-bo has a nice 20 minute workout that should get your started.

like they said, you have to do a total body aerobic exercise, don't believe the shows you see on TV, exercising the abs will tone and grow the muscle, but it will not isolate the fat burning in that area.

You can do situps 'til the cows come home, it wont get rid of the spare tire around your waist.

The ONLY way to get rid of a flabby gut is to run, or bike it off. You need intense cardio training to burn fat, and it needs to keep your heart rate up consistantly for over 30 minutes. Weight training and situps do not burn fat, they only build muscle.

Diet modification can help, but only so much. If you starve yourself, or skip protein, your body will consume it's muscle mass before it consumes the fat.

If, after you've run off the flab, you wish to tone up the muscles in your tummy, the best is still the situp/crunch. No special machines needed, and you can do them anywhere... so there's no excuse not to.

How about playing basketball? Sounds like a good alternative to running around the block a bunch of times. And it works your arms and your legs, and I would assume its good at burning fat... and its like 80 degrees today so that should help too :)

what do ya think?

B-ball will work

other good possibilities

biking
rollerblading
walking briskly

You HAVE to do it for more than 30 minutes to get into the fat burning zone.

the usual crunches PLUS jogging PLUS eating healthy.

i am 21 now and i never want to see the day when i start to develop a belly. that's why i do nightly crunches, 200 of them.
plus it helps that I have high metabolism :)

This'll probably work. Actually workout yer entire body (lifting) as well cuz it'll burn many more calories than cardio exercise alone. This way you can maintain good physique, build, and size while losing the weight around the waist. As to diet, just make sure yer consuming fewer calories than you expend. Make sure yer not eating right before bed. 2-3 hours after working out your body should still be burning calories faster than normal, probably a good time to eat.

Tae-bo

that will kick your ass so bad if you havent done it...OMG...double time??? screw you...

Haha, that's so true. My wife has a few of those tapes and it looks pretty hard. She even does the 8 minute one once in a while. Holy crap!! All I see is a bunch of arms and legs flailing around. I'm not trying to make fun of her, she's pretty good at it, but it's real hard work and you better be prepared to move real fast.

To work the flab off, do some cardio like the guys said:

The optimal work-out schedule is to do your cardio first thing in the morning when you wake up...drink about 16oz of water, don't eat anything, and then go to town. IF you know how to workout you only need to do cardio for about 15-25 minutes. Check some good fitness sites or look at some of the training books recommended by places like "track and field news". After running or whatnot, don't eat for about 30-60 minutes, and then give yourself a high quality protein meal.

For your abs...work them like you would any other muscle. I laugh at the people who strain in the gym to something like 5 sets of 100 crunches. Think about it...are your abs muscles any different from any other muscle group in your body? NO. So don't blast them with low resistance high rep sets.

I do my abs in a pyramid. Here's what to do (rest only about 45-60 seconds between sets unless otherwise noted):

set #1 - crunches on a flat bench, do about 12-20 or so...don't exhaust yourself
set #2 - 10-12 reps on a crunch machine, set the weight so that you could do about 20 reps if you wanted to
set #3 - 8-10 reps on crunch machine, set weight so you could do about 14-16 reps
set #4 - 6 reps on crunch machine, set weight so that you could do about 8 reps
set #5 - 12 reps on crunch machine, use same weight as in set #3, do not rest afterwards, go straight to set #6
set #6 - 12+ reps on crunch machine, use weight from set #2...try for 12 reps but keep going until muscle failure.

Your done! This simple routine is very quick but burns like crazy on sets #5 and #6.

Does this work? Well, I do this once every 3-4 days with my leg work out (been doing it about 6 months or so)...the "clefts" between the muscles of my eight pack are about 1/4-1/2" deep so my abs are pretty ripped and my gut is also extremely strong which has vast improved my all around strength and speed. MY rib cage muscles are also pretty cut.

I think I'm around 8-10% bodyfat but I don't really know. Also, sometimes I run twice a day for about 20-25 minutes each time, morning and evening, or I play basketball in the evening every now and then.

And don't forget, proper nutrition is paramount to building a healthy fit body. That is a whole other story; anyone who wants to know a little about it, feel free to PM me.

Just trying to help!
