Excercise and endorphins

I understand that exercise causes the brain to release endorphins, thus lifting one's spirits. However, I was always under the impression that this was a gradual thing-i.e. if you exercise on a regular basis you may over time notice a change in mood or outlook.

Well a friend of mine has a different take on it. He's claiming that when he runs long distances (couple miles), about an hour later he feels excellent "as a result of the endorphins." To me that sounds like a drug. 😉 He doesn't exercise on a regular basis.

So what do you guys think? Am I wrong?

Your friend is refering to a runners high and both you and your friend are correct. Constant exercise will help your mood and outlook over time, but there are chemicals released immediately from one's brain after physical exertion that can cause euphoria.

Hmm...I'm gonna guess by "drug" you meant chemical. 😉

Alright, in that case, time to ask a totally stupid question: How much should I run tonight? 😉

How are you going to misquote me, I clearly said chemical in my post 😀

Not everybody gets a runners high, I usualy just feel better after working out, but that's probably due to the fact that I got my blood pumping.

This thread really makes me want to get off my ass and start working out again, I havent been to the gym in ages and my exercise bike probably has cobwebs on it by now.
