Excercise advice

Hey all, basically I'm trying to get in a bit better shape because i feel like i haven't really been eating healthy or staying too active over the summer. I'm not so concerned with losing weight (i'm 5'11" and about 160) as gaining muscle. I am starting to get the whole man-boob thing, not too bad, but i'd like toget rid of it before i'm double d or something.

Unfortunately I have no equipment and can't really afford any, nor a gym membership. I could probably buy a couple of cheap barbells, but beyond that i'm limited to things i can do myself, with everyday objects, and a flight of stairs.

Oh, if you couldn't tell i'm a beginner at this, so keep that in mind. Last time i tried to get in shape i would up sore for a week cause i had done far too much. I'd love a simple, reasonably quick workout i could do before bed every or every other night.

Thanks for any advice!

Think aerobic exercises to get rid of any extra flesh. As far as gaining muscle, using your own body as a weight is very effective. Think 12-30 pushups, situps on the floor, that sort of thing.

Also "weight" can be made out of almost anything, in this case think gallon milk jugs filled with water with which you can do curls and other typically weight only exercises.

Edit: Can't remember the exact site, but the govt. has a very good website on getting started with exercising, and has a number of tips along the lines you asked. Try a google search for government health weight lifting or something like that.

Do you have access to some weights? You can visit www.bodybuilding.com for a lot of different excersizes and routines to meet your goals. I started with some of their routines but now I just do my own to get where I need to be. If you don't have access to weights, at least get started on some isometric type things like pushups, situps, dips, etc. It won't build muscle fast, but I know quite a few guys who have beefed up without weights including Usher. I'm not promoting usher, I'm just saying he got fit by using his body to work out.

oh, and no real access to weights... not during the summer or at home during the schoolyear at least... my college (UMD) has an excellent rec center, but i can't get there during the summer too easily

Get a backpack, throw some heavy stuff in there, but evenly distribute it. Then lay three chairs in tripod. Feet go on one, hands on each of the other two, and start doing pushups. Go as far down between the chairs as you can with backpack on. Makes for a good workout.

Fill some milk or water jugs with wet sand....

Sounds like you have Gynecomastia. If you are 5?11 and weigh only 160 with breast.

It could very well be excess fat though.
