It's his second video in a series called sequelitis
(his first if you're interested: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aip2aIt0ROM)

I know it's geared toward consoles since MegaMan is primarily a console game, but I thought I'd throw it in the PC Gaming section because this is where this topic gets the most discussion.

In the end, I thought he had an amazing point, and it was funny to boot. Also helps that I #&%@#$ LOVE MegaMan X too.

What do you guys think?

This video is a little different. It talks about how developers walk gamers through everything and how this example, Megaman X taught mechanics through well written gameplay as opposed to tool tips or something. That's the gist of it.

Interestingly...as far as console games go, Megaman got more complicated with later versions..as opposed to most games these days lol.

extra creditz has an excellent discussion of "easy" games as well:

the next episode (skinner box mechanics) is also interesting for those who never took/don't remember their intro psych.

Actually every video they have is awesome. I don't agree w/all their points but I love the videos.

Wow I was super impressed with that video. I played Mega Man X on the SNES when I was a kid and I knew it was a good game too. I didn't know why, or at least wasn't as articulate as him but everything he points out is true and those of us who played it inherently knew it.

Did you really miss it?

Current games try to spoonfeed everything to the player. That is dumb.

And not only was the game-play in Megaman X fantastic, even the soundtrack was superb.

That's the Good ol' Days in action right there. The younger players (younger by at least two generations of console releases) don't get it when "older" players say this, the "good old days". It's not just in reference or mere nostalgia. I'm not sure if such gamers will ever understand how video gaming changed over time (especially on consoles), and often not for the best.

I agree.

Funny thing is, my best friend wants his kid to play games growing up and I was able to talk him into letting me bring her up with them. Starting her off with a NES and MegaDrive and working our way up each generation after she gets to play a lot of the classics. Since I own all the old systems and most the classics she will get an authentic gaming experience like many of us, though at an accelerated rate. He grew up playing most the same stuff I have and I'll be loaning him the systems/games one at a time. We just hope she actually likes playing video games otherwise that idea is shot :p
