I didn't read that whole story, but as I recall wasn't it hypothesized that they used up all the wood and had to go elsewhere to use up all THAT wood?

Reminds me of Oregon....

Pretty much. The whole quickly use up all the resources, but every new generation doesnt remember how big the forests used to be, so they didnt have any long term data as to the effects of deforestation. Over time, they end up with nothing, they lose the ability to fish and harvest food yada yada.

Essentially, its a really good read about the downfall of society on a very small scale. The author speculates the same could happen on a worldwide scale, which obviously it *could* although it would be vastly more difficult.

Deal. Tell you what, read half the article, we can cuddle, then read the other half and we'll cuddle again. The cuddling should lessen the shock to your system from being away from ATOT.

I read the whole thing; can I get a double cuddle?

It was a pretty interesting read.

However I do not agree with his conclusions with how it could happen in today's cities such as New York. Easter Island, obviously, was a very isolated civilization. With technology, industry, and trade I do not think the lack of one resource in an area will destory that civilization. New York City is not known as a logging city nor farm country but I think they get wood products and food just fine.

What I find most interesting about the article was the implied selfishness of the islanders when it came to destroying their environment. I find it almost ironic because typically people like to point out how more primative societs cherish the Earth yadda yadda yadda. Evidently these people did not.
