What is it about this gum that makes it taste like cough syrup?

Maltitol, Sorbitol and Mannitol are two only two listed ingredients which don't jump out at me (Sorbitol does, but I don't know what it is, until I look up in a second).

EDIt: Wikipedia says these are all sweeteners.

Oh, and:
The gum currently comes in nine flavors: Tangerine Freeze, Polar Ice, Peppermint, Spearmint, Winterfresh, Chlorophyll, Night Chill, Fire and Inferno (cinnamon)

I've figured it out. It's the taste of crack in its purest form. Despite tasting like absolute shit, I now have 8 pieces in my mouth. I can't explain how this has happened, because it's all a blur to me. Now I'm out of gum and yet, I still want more.

What's happening here?

Excel is the single most popular brand in Canada (it's owned by Wrigley's). I think it's called Eclipse in the US.
