excel slow at various things

my mom has been complaining about this thing on excel XP ever since she got a new comp. she used to use a tbird 900 and had no problems with excel being slow. then I got a tbred 1700+ with all new components and she has a problem with doing *various* operations on excel where *in some cases* it will show an hourglass and take about 3 secs. for example, sometimes when she tells it to multiply 2*2 or add a new row or something simple like that. everything else is fast on the machine. she tried identical operations on my comp (tbred 2700+ which shouldn't make any difference) and they're instant. we're both fully updated with office service packs, but she had the same problems on her new comp before she installed the updates.

Is the hard drive set to spin down after a few minutes on the new machine? Maybe it takes a few seconds to spin back up before it can read something and do the multiplication.

no, it's not the hard drive.
I thought it would be kinda hard to understand how I explained it. I can't really think of another way though....
when I say it "sometimes" happens, I don't mean depending on the time she does it. it's just when she does certain operations on certain data, but it happens with those certain ones every time
