Excel question

In a calendar, some dates are marked with a color to signify e.g. a due date. One date has two colors. The number for the date should be set 'in' the colors, like this:

But instead it's in a field of white 'on top' of the colors, like this:

How to fix? I believe this is Excel 97.

odd, i've never seen it like that...
how about this.
select the cell and go to Edit>Clear>All
and start all over with your coloring?
