Excel question updating linked spreadsheets

I have a very large excel model where one sheet B links to cells that are formulas in Sheet A, and sheet C inks to cells that are formulas in sheet B, and D links to C, etc. This linking goes 4 spreadsheets deep, for 6 different models = 24 spreadsheets. If I update values in sheet A, do I need to open sheets in proper order to get values updated in sheet D? IE new values in sheet A, open sheet B, open sheet C, open sheet D? Or Can I just open up all 4 spreadsheets in the folder at once to get the values to fully update?

I haven't used excel for a couple of years, but I seem to recall a setting for when linked formulas update. I know that's not much help, but it's all I've got. My only other answer would be to turn it off then back on, probably not the right solution to this problem.

The setting you're looking for is update on enter or continuous update - something like that. When you reference other workbooks (not worksheets) then it will take the last calculated version of that workbook - so if you need that workbook to update values, then you need to start from the bottom and work your way up.

You may want to look into something like an online hosted pivottable that is always updated and available. We do that for our significant data digging in my company.
