Excel Help, GETPIVOTDATA

Anyone familiar with this function? I'm having a tough time figuring it out.
Can't even figure the first step?
What is the Data_Field? The name of the pivot table?
All I want to to is return the total from a date and a place. Like using sumif/s.. 12/28 first place would be 68..

Doesn't work out of a pivot table and I don't want to pull it out of the raw data. It'll have tens of thousands of rows/columns..
