excel formula pasting problem

MrDudeMan

Lifer
i know how to paste formulas between worksheets and books, but how do you copy formulas to an entirely different spreadsheet? paste special does not work. ive tried every option.

i have A-F and 1-55 filled with formulas (almost) and i want them to be copied to an already existing HUGE spreadsheet. i select them all, copy, and paste them in the new sheet, but only values get transfered, not formulas. ive searched the MS database, this forums, and google...no answer.

please help!

edit: its Office 2k3

works fine here....is automatic calculation on in your destination spreadsheet?

does your destination have merged cells or is it autofiltered?

try pasting that into a new blank spreadsheet...what happens?

or maybe I'm not understanding the problem.

if i open grades.xls (the one with the formulas) and cut or copy all of the info into my new spreadsheet, it copies all of the values but none of the formulas. if i am inside grades.xls and i click new for a new book, the values and formulas copy to that spreadsheet. the problem is when i am copying it to a completely different file. i dont know how to tell if auto calculation is enabled.

i opened a brand new spreadsheet and copied it all in there...only values were transferred, so i know it isnt my existing sheet. and no, there are no merged cells.

thanks for your reply and help so far

You have to open the second spreadsheet it the same instance of Excel. Then you should be able to copy and paste the formulas. You can also copy entire sheets.

If anybody knows how to do this with 2 or more instance of excel please tell us.

elkinm had the right answer...you are opening another instance of excel by clicking on the icon or from the start menu, etc.

open your first file, then use "file > open" to open the next file...then you'll be able to cut and paste formulas
