Excel 97 file opening problem

Ok.. I have users in Excel 97. After a while when they try to open certain files it opens another file first and then throws up several error messages. The error messages pertain to Cant find file U_T march.xls. Ok.. the file he wants to open is called U_T march.xls
He opens it but it opens U.xls first. ( there is a file called U.xls) and then it tries to open the U_T march.xls file but starts putting up error messages about can?t find files U_.xls, _T.xls, and march.xls There are no files named this at all.. it is pieces of the file name he is trying to open. But if you say ok to all of them then it opens. I try to open the same file on another computer and it works fine.. doesn?t open the U.xls file at all.
Now here is another fun part. If you rename the U_T march.xls file to UU_T march.xls file it opens fine.

Follow me? The only cure I can come up for this is reinstall excel. This is ok for a time but it happens randomly to several computers over time. I have scanned these computers with 2 different up to date virus checkers and nothing is found. I have also scanned the files in question. I want to know why this is happening if anyone knows please share the knowledge.

Try logging on to the same machine as yourself. If it works fine, the problem probably sits on the user's profile, I had something similar happen to me... strange, but true.
